Tiểu Sử Trưởng Lão Hòa Thượng Thích Từ Thông

Trưởng lão Hòa thượng thế danh Nguyễn Văn Sáu, sinh ngày mùng 1 tháng 4 năm Mậu Thìn (1928), tại làng Đông Hòa Hiệp, huyện Cái Bè, tỉnh Định Tường.

Thân phụ là cụ ông Nguyễn Văn Giai, pháp danh Từ Hóa; thân mẫu là cụ bà Nguyễn Thị Thoại. Ngài sinh trưởng trong một gia đình có truyền thống Nho học, nề nếp và kính tin Tam bảo.

Từ thuở nhỏ, Ngài thường theo mẹ đến chùa lễ Phật. Nhân duyên với Phật pháp ngày càng sâu dày và dần đưa Ngài đến con đường xuất gia tu học.

Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông was born Nguyễn Văn Sáu, on the first day of the fourth lunar month in the year Mậu Thìn (1928), in Đông Hòa Hiệp village, Cái Bè District, Định Tường Province, Vietnam.

His father was Nguyễn Văn Giai, Dharma name Từ Hóa, and his mother was Nguyễn Thị Thoại. He was raised in a family grounded in the Confucian tradition, where learning, moral discipline, and reverence for the Triple Gem were deeply cherished.

From childhood, he often accompanied his mother to the temple to pay homage to the Buddha. Through these quiet beginnings, his affinity with the Dharma gradually deepened, eventually leading him to leave the household life and enter the path of practice.

Năm 19 tuổi, vào ngày rằm tháng Tư năm Đinh Hợi (1947), Ngài được song thân cho phép xuất gia tại chùa Phù Châu, huyện Cái Bè, tỉnh Định Tường. Bổn sư Hòa thượng Hồng Tường ban cho Ngài pháp danh Nhựt Thuần.

Năm 1948, Ngài theo Bổn sư lên Sài Gòn và đến chùa Kỳ Lân. Tại đây, Hòa thượng Bửu Thiền nhận thấy tư chất thông minh và chí cầu học của Ngài nên ban pháp hiệu Từ Thông.

Sau đó Ngài nhập học tại Phật học đường Sùng Đức.

Năm 1949, Ngài thọ giới tại Đại Giới đàn do Liên Hải Phật học đường tổ chức, với Đại lão Hòa thượng Thích Trí Tịnh làm Hòa thượng Đường đầu.

Từ năm 1951, Ngài tiếp tục tu học tại Phật học đường Nam Việt – chùa Ấn Quang, lần lượt hoàn tất chương trình Trung đẳng và Cao đẳng Phật học vào năm 1958.

At the age of nineteen, on the full-moon day of the fourth lunar month in the year Đinh Hợi (1947), with the blessing of his parents, he entered monastic life at Phù Châu Temple in Cái Bè District, Định Tường Province.

His Root Teacher, Most Venerable Hồng Tường, bestowed upon him the Dharma name Nhựt Thuần.

In 1948, he accompanied his teacher to Saigon and came to Kỳ Lân Temple. There, Most Venerable Bửu Thiền recognized in the young monk both keen intelligence and an earnest aspiration for the Dharma, and bestowed upon him the Dharma name Từ Thông.

He subsequently entered the Sùng Đức Buddhist Institute.

In 1949, he received the precepts at the Great Ordination Assembly organized by Liên Hải Buddhist Institute, with Great Elder Most Venerable Thích Trí Tịnh serving as the presiding preceptor.

Beginning in 1951, he continued his studies at the Nam Việt Buddhist Institute at Ấn Quang Temple, completing both the Intermediate and Advanced programs of Buddhist Studies by 1958.

Sau khi tốt nghiệp Cao đẳng Phật học, Hòa thượng được cử tham gia Giảng sư đoàn, cùng chư vị giáo phẩm đi thuyết giảng Phật pháp tại nhiều tỉnh miền Đông và miền Tây Nam Bộ.

Từ đó, sự nghiệp của Ngài gắn liền với hai trọng trách lớn: hoằng pháp và giáo dục Tăng Ni.

Ngài từng đảm nhiệm nhiều công tác giáo dục tại các Phật học viện và Ni trường, trong đó có Linh Sơn, Huệ Quang, Phổ Quang, Huệ Nghiêm, Giác Nguyên, Từ Nghiêm và Dược Sư.

Sau khi Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam được thành lập năm 1981, Ngài tham gia Hội đồng Trị sự và công tác hoằng pháp của Giáo hội.

Năm 1989, khi Trường Cơ bản Phật học TP.HCM — tiền thân của Trường Trung cấp Phật học TP.HCM — được thành lập, Hòa thượng được bổ nhiệm làm Hiệu trưởng.

Trong gần bốn thập niên đảm nhiệm trọng trách này, Ngài đã góp phần đào tạo hàng ngàn Tăng Ni để tiếp tục phụng sự Đạo pháp.

Upon completing the Advanced Buddhist Studies program, Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông was appointed to a Dharma teaching delegation, joining senior monastics in expounding the Buddha’s teachings throughout many provinces of southeastern and southwestern Vietnam.

From that time onward, his life became inseparably devoted to two great responsibilities: the propagation of the Dharma and the education of generations of Buddhist monastics.

Over the years, he served in educational roles at numerous Buddhist institutes and nunneries, including Linh Sơn, Huệ Quang, Phổ Quang, Huệ Nghiêm, Giác Nguyên, Từ Nghiêm, and Dược Sư.

Following the establishment of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in 1981, he served in the Executive Council and contributed extensively to the Sangha’s Dharma propagation activities.

In 1989, when the Ho Chi Minh City School of Fundamental Buddhist Studies — predecessor of the Ho Chi Minh City Intermediate School of Buddhist Studies — was established, Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông was appointed its Rector.

For nearly four decades, he carried this responsibility with constancy and dedication, helping educate thousands of monks and nuns who would in turn continue the work of serving the Dharma.

To teach the Dharma is not merely to transmit words. At its deepest, it is to help another recognize what words themselves cannot contain. This spirit quietly permeated his long life of teaching.

Năm 2017, tại Đại hội đại biểu Phật giáo toàn quốc lần thứ VIII, Ngài được suy tôn làm Thành viên Hội đồng Chứng minh Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam.

Throughout his life of practice and service, Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông held or was entrusted with many important responsibilities, including:

• Rector of the Advanced and Intermediate Buddhist Studies Schools of Ho Chi Minh City

• Former Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Executive Board and Head of its Buddhist Monastic Education Committee
• Abbot and Spiritual Elder of Phù Châu Temple
• Abbot and Spiritual Elder of Liễu Liễu Đường

In 1992, at the Third National Buddhist Congress, he was formally elevated to the ecclesiastical rank of Hòa thượng (Most Venerable).

In 2017, at the Eighth National Buddhist Congress, he was appointed a Member of the Council of Elders of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

Bên cạnh sự nghiệp giáo dục và hoằng pháp, Trưởng lão Hòa thượng dành nhiều thời gian nghiên cứu, biên soạn, phiên dịch và chú giải kinh luận.

Ngài trước tác dưới bút danh Như Huyễn Thiền sư.

Alongside his lifelong work in Buddhist education and Dharma propagation, Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông devoted himself to the study, compilation, translation, exposition, and commentary of Buddhist scriptures and treatises.

He wrote under the name Như Huyễn Thiền Sư — Zen Master “Like an Illusion.”

Among his known works are:

His scriptures, commentaries, teaching texts, written works, and thousands of recorded Dharma lectures constitute a precious Buddhist legacy for generations of monks, nuns, lay practitioners, and students of the Dharma.

Throughout these teachings, learning was never intended merely for the accumulation of knowledge. Again and again, the teachings return the student to direct contemplation: to see through attachment to names and forms, without falling into their denial; to understand emptiness without abandoning conventional truth; and to walk the Middle Way without abiding in either extreme.

Such is the spirit of Prajñā: wisdom does not grasp at existence, nor does it dwell in non-existence.

The finger points toward the moon; when the moon is seen, one does not mistake the finger for the moon.

Sau một đời phụng sự Phật pháp, Trưởng lão Hòa thượng Thích Từ Thông thuận thế vô thường, thâu thần viên tịch lúc 12 giờ 45 phút ngày 17 tháng 10 năm 2025, nhằm ngày 26 tháng 8 năm Ất Tỵ, tại Trường Trung cấp Phật học TP.HCM.

Hạ lạp: 76 năm

Một đời hơn bảy mươi năm hoằng pháp và giáo dục của Ngài đã để lại một di sản sâu rộng cho Phật giáo Việt Nam.

After a lifetime devoted to the Buddha-Dharma, Most Venerable Thích Từ Thông, in accordance with the law of impermanence, peacefully gathered body and mind and entered stillness at 12:45 p.m. on October 17, 2025, corresponding to the twenty-sixth day of the eighth lunar month in the year Ất Tỵ, at the Ho Chi Minh City Intermediate School of Buddhist Studies.

Dharma age: 76 rains retreats

More than seventy years of Dharma teaching and Buddhist education came to completion.

Yet in the Dharma, coming and going are names provisionally given to conditions arising and conditions ceasing. What has been transmitted through wisdom and compassionate practice does not end with the passing of a single form.

His life and teachings remain a profound legacy within Vietnamese Buddhism.
